rain doesn't put young down rally fans off...
04 Jun 2019
Dispite the awful weather, members of the Carryduff Forklift Down Rally team and Go Motorsport Regional Development Officer, Jonathan MacDonald received the warmest welcome at St. Malachys Primary School in Castlewellan yesterday morning.
Jonathan spoke to the P4 pupils about the safety measures undertaken by competitors and explained some of the important factors to remember when spectating at Motorsport events. He showed various pieces of safety equipment and answered all sorts of questions. The biggest giggle came when he answered a question telling the children that competitors had to wear fire proof underwear!
Rathfriland Motor Club Chairman, Malcolm Johnson delighted the children by bringing his rally car along, and the rain didn't seem to matter when Malcolm suggested going outside for a look around it.
We would like to thank the staff and pupils of St. Malachys, in particular the school Principal, Mr. O'Neill who's enthusiasm for education and commitment to his pupils was very evident during our visit. Also Mrs Smyth, who earned herself a round of applause when she tried out a helmet and Hans Device and waited patiently for her turn to take a seat behind the wheel.
We hope some of the children will remember our visit and perhaps a future in Motorsport awaits them!
