carryduff forklift down rally celebrates international womens day 2018...
08 Mar 2018
Thursday 8th March 2018 was International Womens Day and it seemed appropriate to introduce you all to the first of three members of our Safety Team, Claire Morton.
Claire who is originally from the North East of England, moved to Northern Ireland in 2015 and now lives close to Castlewellan.
Claire has been around Motorsport all her life and fondly remembers attending various events at Silverstone with her dad, so it was no surprise that in 1999 she stepped into the drivers seat on the Scottish Hill Rally before opting for the navigators side of the car.
As a member of Cramlington and District Motor Club, Claire took on the role of Secretary but this lady isn't afraid to roll her sleeves up and has marshaled at a vast variety of events throughout the UK. Claire later joined Darlington Motor Club, who run most of the events at Croft Circuit, and again became involved in both marshaling and set-up crew.
Claire joined Rathfriland Motor Club in 2015 when she made the move to Northern Ireland, and immediately got involved, looking after Spectator Safety for the Down Rally in 2016, before being nominated by the ANICC to attend a Females in sport leadership skills course, one of only twelve places offered in Northern Ireland.
In the future Claire would like to eventually train as a Clerk of the Course but vows not to forget the grass roots of marshalling at RMC and other clubs events.
While busy preparing for this years event, Claire commented; "I'm delighted to be involved in the safety side again in 2018, it's a new team with new challenges. I think it great to have both clubs working together on what is a local event for us both. The prospect of having both local and international competitors is quite exciting."
Away from rallying her interests include vintage and historic shows and car runs, and she organised the Rathfriland Motor Club stand at Kilbroney show in 2017. She is also hugely supportive of her partner who runs Retro Rally Replica Group and co-hosts the Ford Mourne Run.
