downshire pupils up to speed on rally safety...
04 Jun 2019
The weather was a little different this week as we headed off to Hillsborough with members of the Carryduff Forklift Down Rally team and Go Motorsport Regional Development Officer, Jonathan MacDonald. We received an excited welcome from the P6 and P7 pupils at Downshire Primary School this morning.
As the pupils gathered in the Assembly Hall, Jonathan talked about the items of clothing and safety measures taken by competitors. Carryduff Forklift Down Rally team member Stephen Jess kindly modelled a HANS device and Helmet, while the children were able to describe what a roll cage looks like and what the benefits of it were. We were really impressed with the knowledge on display today, we talked about top speeds, pace notes and even asked if the cars were 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive.
Ballynahinch and District Motor Club member, Jonny Morrow, created a wave of excitement as he brought along his rally car into the school playground. The children, and some of the teachers, enjoyed trying out the driver’s seat for size.
The Carryduff Forklift Down Rally would like to thank all of the staff and pupils of Downshire Primary School for hosting the team today. School Principal, Mr Knaggs, was even given a lesson on how to enter and exit a rally car by Jonny Morrow.
We can’t wait to see some of the children in attendance at the Eikon Centre and the stages using their new found knowledge on how to be safe at Motorsports events.
